RICHARD L. SHEPARDWhy did well-liked COL Richard Shepard kill himself?

That's the question our CI's down in Huntsville, Ala. at the Redstone Arsenal have been asking those who knew the friendly, 28-year Army veteran.

Out of respect for the dead, and his family, we won't get into too much speculation here, except to say there is an ongoing investigation. Those who remember what happened to the late MAJ Gloria Davis (see related stories box below) might get an idea of what we are hinting at.

WHAT WAS THE MOTIVE?

Few details are being released other than the colonel's body was discovered in his residence Sept. 27th. The Kansas native was dead from a close-fired gunshot wound.

"Foul play is not suspected," said an official source.

The CID is carefully checking to see why the Contracting Command's deputy chief of staff for human capital might have wanted to end his life.

Our hearts and prayers go out to COL Shepard's widow Dee and their two sons at this tragic time in their lives.
