One year ago, MilitaryCorruption.com stood alone among the nation’s media in condemning the “official” version of “suicide” in the strange death of Air Force Col. Philip Shue. Now, in the light of the latest developments, we have been thoroughly vindicated.
Shue, a well-respected USAF psychiatrist, had been found dead in a car wreck in Boerne, Tex. April 16, 2003, his body surgically mutilated and strands of torn duct tape hanging from his wrists and boots. The colonel’s courageous widow, former Air Force nurse Tracy Shue, knew this was a case of foul play, but top “officials” – from controversial Bexar County Medical Examiner Vincent DiMaio, District Attorney Bruce Curry, to the ever-obnoxious leader of the Lackland AFB branch of the Office of Special Investigations, (OSI) – rushed to pin the “suicide” label on the mysterious death. Why such haste?
Now a bombshell autopsy report by famed forensic pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht strongly disputes the “official” findings. The question should be asked – “How many people are going to go to jail, let alone see their careers ended, by their specious roles in this disgraceful cover-up?”
WE STOOD ALONE IN DEMANDING THE TRUTH
Tracy Shue contacted us a short time after her husband’s death, asking us to look into the circumstances of the case. We soon realized the Air Force and other agencies were trying to attach the much-used “suicide” label to the colonel’s demise for reasons that we suspected ranged from “incompetence” to “cover-up.” Whatever the motive, we set out to expose it. And we did!
Soon we were joined by top Air Force TIMES
reporter Rod Hafemeister, whose excellent reports buttressed our own findings.
The Boerne (Tex.) STAR joined the growing chorus of doubt, while the San Antonio EXPRESS-NEWS disgraced itself by parroting the company line and using the word SUICIDE without quotation marks around it in a front-page headline. It’s one thing to be “eager to please” the Air Force in such a strong military town, but to unwittingly be part of a cover-up of the real facts should, in retrospect, cause some “heads to roll” at the Texas city’s only daily newspaper.
Over the past year, MilitaryCorruption.com has published a series of hard-hitting articles, exploring various facets of the Shue case. We exposed the controversial record of egotistical Bexar County Medical Examiner Vincent DiMaio. We went after the questionable grand jury tactics of arrogant District Attorney Bruce Curry – who should thank his lucky stars the Wecht report didn’t come out before his closer-than-expected re-nomination race for another term in office earlier this year.
This web site also spotlighted the outrageous treatment of the widow Shue by the goons at O.S.I. What were they trying to hide? And will the obnoxious major in charge – we called her office and offered her a chance to comment – now be appropriately dealt with by her chain-of-command? Another mess for embattled Air Force Secretary James “bullfrog” Roche to untangle. Maybe our own Arizona Sen. John McCain, a longtime Roche critic, can “light a fire” under the troubled service secretary’s ample posterior.
MCC REVEALED FACTS ABOUT BLOODY CELL PHONE
Another of our hard-hitting investigative articles revealed the true facts about the undocumented claim by DiMaio on Court TV that Shue must have committed “suicide” because he “failed to summon help” via his cell phone, found in the wrecked automobile that slowly drifted off Interstate 10 and slammed into a clump of trees.
The smirking, self-satisfied medical examiner, no stranger to TV and self-promotion, claimed the colonel didn’t call for help because there was “no blood” found on the outside of the phone.
MilitaryCorruption.com blew that claim out of the water when we located and named a witness who opened the clamshell-like device and found significant “blood stains” inside. So much for another of DiMaio’s “theories,” falling down around him like the proverbial “house of cards.”
THE D. A. TRIES TO DECEIVE COL. SHUE’S WIDOW
It was readers of this web site that first learned how District Attorney Bruce Curry, one of the loudest proponents of the “suicide” scenario, tried to convince Tracy Shue to cremate the body of her husband. After all, the D. A. cajoled the widow, the results of his investigation would just show the auto crash caused Shue’s death. Nothing said about a full-court press for a “suicide” ruling. Better that the body be disposed of, right? No need for a second autopsy. “Why that would just be a waste of money, wouldn’t it,” said the spider (slick D. A.) to the fly (grief-stricken widow).
Thank God the quick-witted and suspicious former nurse didn’t fall for Curry’s line. If she had, there would have been no remains for Dr. Wecht to analyze! Now wouldn’t THAT be too bad? “Suicide” is such a “convenient” label for folks like Curry, DiMaio and his contemptible cohorts at O.S.I.
With a “suicide” ruling, no one has to beat the bushes looking for a perpetrator. Everything can be wrapped up in a neat bundle, the string deftly tied in knots so the truth cannot be easily ascertained. How many times has the military brass used that tactic to cover up a homicide or questionable death? It usually works.
Tell the survivors to just shut up and go away, hinting that any public doubts might endanger the family’s receiving the deceased service member’s Serviceman’s Group Life Insurance (SGLI). At the time of Col. Shue’s death, that was $250,000 – a not inconsiderable sum to folks in trailer parks and up in the hills.
“THANK GOD FOR MILITARYCORRUPTION.COM”
Those were the words, uttered earlier this year, by Tracy Shue, the dead colonel’s courageous widow, as reported by our friends over at Gringoman.us.
The 22-year Air Force veteran and retired lieutenant colonel, praised MCC for our “dogged determination” to dig out all the facts in this tangled murder case.
“You were the first to print the truth about what really happened,” said the attractive and petite Katherine Hepburn look-alike, “and I shall never forget it. Our whole family thanks MilitaryCorruption.com and your team of investigators who led the charge to find out the true facts about what was done to my husband.”
DR. WECHT DROPS A FORENSIC “BOMBSHELL”
It was a year to the day of Col. Shue’s mysterious death in April 2003, that famed forensic pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht of Pittsburgh, Pa. dropped what could only be described as a “megaton bomb” on the heads of those who had been hoping this report would never come.
Citing conditions “consistent with homicide,” Wecht wrote that the information he deduced from the second autopsy “does not indicate his (Shue’s) death was . . . a suicide. Rather, it is suggestive that another person or persons may have been involved in his death.”
Whoa! That was NOT what DiMaio, Curry and their Air Force pals wanted to hear! It is obvious that the “cover-up,” if that is what it is, has come unraveled, and that a full and complete investigation will now be made to get to the bottom of WHO KILLED COL. SHUE? Can indictments and arrests be far behind? Just follow the “money trail,” folks. See who stood to benefit the most from Shue’s death.
We don’t mean to suggest that Shue’s former wife, who held a million dollar life insurance policy on her ex-hubby had anything to do with this. Of course not! She has the presumption of innocence and every right to refuse to take a polygraph test when offered by investigators. Everyone knows such test results, while useful in some ways, aren’t admissible in a court of law.
MilitaryCorruption.com has named no one as prime suspect in the abduction, torture and subsequent death of Col. Shue. And we won’t. But we know a lot more than we are letting on here. So we’ll just say, let “justice” take its course. The “footsteps” down the hall are getting closer, much closer. Then will come the “knock on the door” from the FBI. And the killers will be caught.
Yes, the colonel died as a result of trauma from head injuries suffered in the crash of his auto. But, the surgically-removed nipples, slit in his chest, missing last digit of his left pinky finger, and a sliced off ear lobe, all indicate in NO WAY did the colonel mutilate himself!
WECHT BUILDS HIS CASE AGAINST “SUICIDE”
Undoubtedly there are those who hoped Wecht’s long-awaited report would never arrive. They have vested interests in the “suicide” cover-up being accepted by the Kendall County Justice of the Peace Nancy White [more about her in an upcoming story.] In the face of a media firestorm, now that this web site has blazed the trail to the truth, White would be hard-pressed to endorse the “suicide” theory. But stranger things have happened in Texas, so we will keep a “close eye peeled” on what comes out of her office in the days and weeks ahead.
Listed below are just a few of the reasons Dr. Wecht came to his dramatic conclusions regarding the death of Col. Philip Shue:
THE DUCT TAPE: No fingerprints from the colonel – or anyone else, for that matter – were found on the tape. “There were no gloves found in the motor vehicle to suggest that he [Shue] put the tape on himself.” Rather, someone else had to ‘wipe” the tape to conceal their prints, and whoever they are, they were not the dead colonel.
THE ACCIDENT REPORT: It revealed that Shue’s vehicle didn’t deliberately crash into trees. It gradually “veered off the highway,” indicating the driver was incapacitated or losing consciousness. Therefore, Shue could not possibly have “aimed” his auto for the trees in a bid to kill himself, as DiMaio has contended.
MEDICAL REPORTS: Col. Shue’s psychiatric reports, which indicated – beginning in January 2000, he was treated for depression and anxiety stemming from written death threats – also showed the officer was “not suicidal” (are you reading this DiMaio?) and “responded well to treatment.”
TOPICAL CREAM: Another element of the error-filled first autopsy by DiMaio’s office was the claim that Shue had administered an anesthetic cream to his chest prior to slicing off his nipples and cutting a long slit into his chest with a sharp object. Wecht found an absence of “prilocaine,” one of two components of the alleged cream cited in DiMaio’s autopsy report. Wecht determined the substance in Shue’s blood meant that “lidocaine” had to have come from another source. Perhaps a rag used over the mouth of a struggling Shue as he was abducted on the road leading from his home to duty at Wilford Hall Medical Center in nearby San Antonio?
NO MOTIVE FOR “SUICIDE”: Everything about Col. Shue’s last days alive indicate he was happily planning for the future and not in the least “suicidal.” For example, Wecht cites Shue’s preparations for retirement, including taking a cardiac exam. In addition, was the colonel’s purchase of an expensive home in Alabama, as part of his plans to establish a lucrative private medical practice in an affluent part of Birmingham. And finally, Shue’s solid, long-lasting and loving marriage with, what one family member called, his true “soul mate,” Tracy Shue.
MISSING WEAPON: If Shue mutilated himself, Wecht reasoned, where was the knife or surgical instrument used? “The lack of any weapon that could have caused the trauma noted at autopsy, the missing portions of his body and the absence of his wallet, all strongly and logically suggest that the trauma occurred somewhere outside his vehicle and that another person or persons caused it,” Wecht wrote.
Now that the Air Force has been caught appearing to have engaged in a “cover-up” of a high-ranking officer’s murder, isn’t it about time Congress held hearings to investigate all the many cases that have been successfully shoved under the rug – until now?
Certainly the case of murdered Marine Corps Col. John Sabow will be affected by the developments in the Shue case, and vice versa.
It is the height of criminality for the U.S. military to not only fail to properly investigate what obviously is a questionable death – remember the National Guard Captain found on a running trail at Fort Knox with 27 deep stab wounds in his body, yet the Army cover-up artists insisted he’d committed “suicide” because he was “depressed.” – but to engage in a conspiracy to cover-up the true cause of said death, THAT should mean court-martial and prison time for all involved.
We at MilitaryCorruption.com say “Let the chips fall where they may.” This horrific practice – calling suspicious deaths “suicides” which tortures the surviving family members, and – in the case of Col. Shue, smeared his memory – should be ended NOW!
