The Army isn't talking about what kind of trouble COL "Vann" Smiley got into a few weeks ago, but they have announced the full colonel and former garrison commander at Grafenwohr, Germany has accepted non-judicial punishment.

The rugged and popular full bird probably is putting in his retirement papers as you read this.

Because there was no court-martial, and the colonel opted to take NJP, we may never know for sure what was the "inappropriate" conduct the brass referred to when they relieved the senior officer of command back on Oct. 31.

All the PAO would admit was Smiley was canned because his superiors felt a "loss of confidence" in the 0-6's "ability to command."

No amount was disclosed as to the dollar total of the fine.

Smiley will be replaced in January by COL James Saenz. The bird colonel is former director of the Commander's Initiatives Group, U.S. Army Special Operations Command at Ft. Bragg, N.C.
