Fighting for the truth . . . exposing the corrupt
COHEN AND WIFE SQUANDER $300,000
FROM DEFENSE BUDGET ON HOLLYWOOD "PARTY"
WHILE GI'S STILL NEED FOOD STAMPS TO SURVIVE
As (hopefully) one of his last official "duties" as America's worst defense secretary since Louis Johnson - that goes back to Harry Truman's time - "high-living" William Cohen and his trophy wife, aging ex-anchorwoman Janet Langhart, have shown the troops in the field and the lower-ranking enlisted members what they really think of them.
While soldiers and sailors, airmen and Marines need food stamps to supplement their meager pay, Cohen and his cronies sipped champagne and feasted on fine vittles to the tune of $300,000 at a Hollywood dinner that was by all accounts, an orgy of excess.
If the word HYPOCRITE comes to mind after all the sickening hype and phony public relations about how much Cohen and his powerful wife "care" about our military, it is entirely appropriate.
COL David Hackworth, www.hackworth.com , was first to expose this fraud for what it is. And like America's most-decorated Vietnam veteran is prone to do, when he "sites in" on a target, he does not miss!
In a column entitled CONDUCT UNBECOMING, Hack reveals that a Pentagon general tipped him off that Cohen was going to splurge a quarter million bucks to throw a "farewell party" for himself at the Beverly Hilton on Nov. 30. Could it be Cohen has show-business ambitions like his boss, the soon-to-be ex-President of the United States?
The only thing wrong with the tip was it under-estimated the damage to the taxpayers and the U.S. defense budget. The real tab came to at least $300 grand with every detail of the bash "personally orchestrated" by Mrs. Cohen.
"Pentagon plastic covered 17 rooms at $400 a night for five nights" for the bigwigs.
Nearly 100 military musicians, entertainers, a drill team and
color guard were flown to Beverly Hills from all over
the country, Hack reported. 350 Hollywood celebrities, Pentagon officials and lawmakers feasted to the tune of $218 per head.
Chief Pentagon propagandist Kenneth Bacon brushed off the $76,000 dinner cost as comparable to what Cohen usually spends (out of our tax dollars) when he is hosting "foreign dignitaries."
Bacon, who helped get a top-secret clearance, high-paying Pentagon job for Clinton "plaything" Monica Lewinsky, and should have gone to jail for breaking the law violating Linda Tripp's privacy releasing her personnel file to journalists, tried to LIE when first confronted with questions about the up-coming Hollywood extravaganza.
Hackworth said the first coverup took the form of a press release
announcing that Cohen and the self-anointed
"First Lady of the Military," Janet Langhart, would host a dinner honoring Bob Hope and the USO "for their contributions to entertaining troops."
Safe, right? After all, Hope is a Republican and an American
icon. Trouble is, when Hackworth checked with Hope contacts in Los Angeles,
no one even knew about the event. Hope, well past 90, has been in declining
some time and in no condition to be "guest of honor" at any such "tribute."
So the Pentagon liars went back into "spin mode" and came up with another excuse to spend money. Now former Lyndon Johnson-aide and longtime Democrat power broker Jack Valenti was to be the "honoree."
The excuse was Valenti was to be honored with the first (note that - the "first") Citizen Patriot Award. Whatever Pentagon flack dreamed THAT one up, promote him from major to light colonel immediately!
At least Valenti, president of the Motion Picture Association of America, is a World War II veteran. Cohen, like his pal Clinton, avoided military service altogether, getting repeated deferments while the less fortunate were fighting and dying in a place called Vietnam.
Hackworth was outraged.
"Moms tell me they mail their kids toilet paper; sergeants say there's no money for ammo; and navy chiefs, pilots, and tank commanders say there's no dough for training or spares.
"But, boy can Cohen - who's spent too many years inside the beltway living high on the public teat - throw a party! It may be just petty cash to "Daddy Warbucks" Cohen, but all that money sure could fill a warehouse full of toilet paper."
EDITOR'S NOTE: WE ARE PLANNING A SPECIAL INVESTIGATIVE REPORT ON WILLIAM COHEN'S DISASTEROUS TENURE AS SECRETARY OF DEFENSE TO APPEAR ON THESE PAGES IN THE NEAR FUTURE.
