FORMER THREE-STAR JOHN STUFFLEBEEM
HOPES HE'LL BE ALLOWED TO RETIRE - WAS FIRED
BY THE CNO FOR LYING TO INVESTIGATORS
ANONYMOUS LETTER WRITER SINKS ADMIRAL'S
CAREER REVEALING DETAILS OF WHITE HOUSE
AFFAIR ALMOST TWENTY YEARS AGO
"Boomer" is just one nickname for the former football punter on the Naval Academy team. John Stufflebeem also had another moniker, "lover-boy." The handsome lady killer was known to have cut a wide swath through the females during his years as a military aide at the White House.
Now one of his affairs has come back to bite him on the butt. The disgraced former director of the Navy Staff has been fired and demoted one grade by Chief of Naval Operations Gary Roughhead. The onetime "golden boy" and veteran aviator hopes he'll be allowed to retire "in grade," but observers tell MilitaryCorruption.com the admiral may be missing another star off his shoulder-boards before his ordeal is over.
AN ANONYMOUS LETTER LED TO IG INVESTIGATION
The trouble began for Stufflebeem - a photogenic Pentagon spokesman many will remember from television briefings on the war in Afghanistan - when an anonymous letter writer told authorities the amorous officer had a sexual relationship with a DOD female at the White House 18 years ago. Stufflebeem was married at the time.
He didn't bother to tell his gal pal that he was wed, and in fact, according to an IG investigation, he flat-out lied to the woman (whose identity has not been revealed). She claimed he told her he was a widower, that his wife had died of cancer and the reason he continued to wear a wedding ring was because his children didn't want him to take it off.
Once, when Stufflebeem was late for a date, the woman dialed his quarters and a female answered. "Boomer" had an explanation for that, too. "Oh, that's just the nanny I hired to take care of my kids." No it wasn't. It was his wife. The scorned woman was enraged and reportedly, when Stufflebeem went to see her and plead forgiveness, the irate former gal pal called him "scum!" and slammed the door in the brass hat's face.
WHO WAS IT THAT "TORPEDOED" STUFFLEBEEM'S CAREER?
Why it has taken all these years for something to be done? Why now, after such a long time, Stufflebeem's career was torpedoed, remains open to speculation.
Rumors are bouncing around Pentagon corridors that the admiral made "one too many enemies" and someone with knowledge of his long-ago affair decided to drop a dime on the "golden boy."
Stufflebeem dug a deeper hole for himself when he denied everything and was caught lying to investigators. "Why don't you interview her (the woman) yourself?" he huffed. The gumshoes took him up on it and got a blistering statement from the scorned woman which includes tales of sex in the White House basement. The now-married female said "lover-boy" got around her by offering to give her a "back rub."
No-nonsense CNO Roughhead could do little else but relieve Stufflebeem of his post and grease his skids right out the door.
COVER-UP - DID PRESIDENT GEORGE H. W. BUSH "LOOK THE OTHER WAY?"
Some Pentagon observers are wondering why Stufflebeem didn't get a reprimand back in 1990 when the incident first took place. "Boomer" had put in for a hasty transfer from his plum White House assignment and his benevolent boss, then-President George H. W. Bush, apparently knew what a mess his Naval aide had gotten himself into.
Was there a cover-up back then? The IG report reveals that Bush said he had been "partially briefed" as to the reason Stufflebeem was asking for a quick transfer. Was the nation's commander-in-chief leaving himself wiggle room and a plausible denial if the truth ever got out?
"I have been partially briefed on your departure," the president wrote. "You are right to have family as your primary concern. You've got a fine career ahead, and quite obviously, I want to help that career along, for you have served here with distinction."
Bush even wrote a letter to Stufflebeem's superiors recommending the junior officer be promoted "as soon as possible."
We can't help but recall a year later, 1992, Bush was in a tight election race with Bill "I did not have sex with that woman" Clinton. The incumbent president tried to win feminist votes by inviting a certain scheming female lieutenant and admiral's aide to the White House who later scored millions of dollars off her alleged "sexual assault" at the Navy's Tailhook Convention.
The then-commander-in-chief "looked the other way" while many fine Naval officers, innocent of any wrongdoing at the sometimes-rowdy convention in Las Vegas, were put through a living hell.
STUFFLEBEEM'S ENEMIES GET THEIR POUND OF FLESH
Admiral Stufflebeem's removal as director of the Navy Staff cost him one star, but speculation now centers around whether or not he will be busted yet another pay grade before he is allowed to retire. Regulations read you can only retire in the last grade "satisfactorily" held. Because the alleged offense occurred a long time ago when Stufflebeem was a much-lower ranking officer, it's possible "Boomer" could get busted "way down" the ranks.
However, our sources say that would be "overkill." Stufflebeem's enemies are content that he has been publicly humiliated and his career destroyed.
"That should be enough to satisfy them," said a Norfolk-based four-striper, who told us "I don't have a dog in this fight."
