Hurlburt Field in Florida has been hard-hit by a Swine Flu outbreak that has infected up to 100 airmen on the key Air Force "Special Operations" installation at Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
"Civilian workers fear the bug could spread to them," said a deep-cover source who works in the Education Building on Lukasik Avenue. Some of the people there, we are told, worry about catching the influenza and bringing it home to children and other family members.
MilitaryCorruption.com has learned that top brass and the public affairs office hoped the media wouldn't get wind of the sizeable number of sick personnel, but a "tipster" contacted the Northwest Florida DAILY NEWS and they immediately inquired as to the extent of the problem.
NUMBER OF FLU CASES COULD BE 40% HIGHER THAN COMMAND ADMITS
"It said in the paper they admitted to some 60 cases," one officer told us, "but the real number could be closer to 100, and it may spread further."
Dr. Karen Chapman, director of the Okaloosa County Health Dept., calls the Swine Flu spread at the Florida base the "first sizeable cluster" in the area, and warns "it won't be the last."
One of the main concerns is some of the bed-ridden military personnel have tested positive for a new strain of the influenza - (H1N1) - which not only debilitates it's target, it can also kill.
The infamous "Spanish Flu," which spread all over the world and killed millions of people between 1918 and 1919, began in the United States on Army bases where returned GI's from France brought home the deadly "bug."
Victims expired quickly from this much-more dangerous strain of flu - only 30 some people have died in Florida so far as a result of Swine Flu - that the city of Philadelphia the last year of World War I - ran out of coffins and undertakers were overwhelmed by the fearsome contagion.
AIR FORCE SHOULD BE ABLE TO CONTAIN OUTBREAK AT HURLBURT FIELD
Air Force medical personnel at Hurlburt are sure this new strain of Swine Flu can be contained and deaths prevented. But the quick spread of the illness caught them off-guard. The fact that officials "tried to keep the outbreak quiet," has not exactly been a morale booster for those not yet ill on the small but very important military installation.
One reason Hurlburt will get priority help from the Pentagon is Air Force Chief of Staff, Gen. Norton "The Baboon" Schwartz, last served at Hurlburt before being promoted to the top Air Force job when Gen. T. Michael Moseley was fired.
Readers of MilitaryCorruption.com, one of the most popular and widely-read military-oriented web sites on the Florida "Panhandle," will remember we urged the over-rated general in an OPEN LETTER to "do the right thing" in regard to the Maj. Jill Metzger "cover-up" scandal. He did not.
Instead of forthrightly addressing the problem - which has badly hurt morale throughout the Air Force, judging from the hundreds of e-mails that have poured into our office here in Arizona - Schwartz has "rewarded" the arrogant and obnoxious Metzger protector, Lt. Gen. Gary North, who is in line to get his fourth star.
AS LONG AS NORTH HOLDS POWER
NO-ONE WILL DARE GO UP AGAINST METZGER
"Now the proverbial 800-pound gorilla weighs more than a ton," said one captain at Eglin AFB, who still resents North's back-stabbing of two of his light colonels in Afghanistan when they got in a fist-fight with a punk from BLACKWATER, the Bush Administration's "private army."
Cleared of all wrong-doing by a minority female investigating officer on the ground there, the colonels were nevertheless sacrificed and careers destroyed by North, who has never been known to avoid dropping to his knees and kissing a "derriere," as long as it belonged to a powerful politician or brass hat who could do the surly general some good.
[EDITOR'S NOTE: We've given up on Schwartz doing anything about the Metzger mess. Thanks to friends in high places, especially the much-loathed OSI, the pampered and protected one has scored a lucrative 100% "disability" pension on TDRL, while running in both the Air Force and Marine Corps Marathons. Can you imagine what our genuinely wounded and disabled vets from Afghanistan and Iraq feel about that "in-your-face" type of arrogance?
If the mercurial North, who hates MilitaryCorruption.com, tries to "ban" us on any Air Force base anywhere in the world, we will haul his butt into federal court and fight him publicly as to whether or not the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and "freedom of the press" is still the law of the land. Even if we are now under an "Obama-Nation." So general, "don't go there," if you know what's good for you.]
