Close, but no cigar.

CMDR Sheryl Tannahill was all set to be promoted to captain. The would-be four-striper was slotted for a job in the Navy Inspector General's Office. Now, all that has gone up in smoke.

The officer is under investigation for having an "unduly familiar relationship" with an ethically-challenged PO1 who once worked for the 0-5 at the Navy Operations Support Center in Nashville, Tenn.

Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class (AW/NAC) Grady Nations moved on to the U.S. Naval Reserve Recruiting Center, located right there in America's country music capitol.

DID CMDR KNOW ABOUT PHONY AWARD?

Now, he's in big trouble for submitting a fraudulent citation for the much-coveted Distinguished Flying Cross. It turns out the only member of his family who actually deserved the award was his father, former USAF Tech. Sgt. Grady M. Nations, who was
a flight engineer on a C-130 in Vietnam and helped save the lives of downed American pilots.

His son, 43 year-old Navy man Nations, wore the high decoration despite his knowledge that he didn't earn it.

The younger Nations was court-martialed for the offense, and according to court papers, information detrimental to CMDR Tannahill was uncovered during the trial.

"Unduly familiar relationship" doesn't necessarily mean that the 40-something officer was doing "the wild thing" with the stocky sailor. We are told he already had a gal pal.

But if Tannahill knew that Nations lied about the DFC and submitted phony paperwork about it, yet didn't report that fact, her Naval career is over. She had been commanding officer at NOSC Nashville since April 2010.
