SPANKS FOR DIFFERENT RANKS”

One was assigned to the Army War College – a lieutenant colonel who rubbed elbows with the “brass hats” at Carlisle Barracks.

The other was an Air Force staff sergeant from Maine, a high-school graduate and NCO with a spotless record.

LTC David Bartlett (see MilitaryCorruption.com’s comprehensive coverage of this case in ARCHIVES) killed his wife in cold blood, pounding her face into a bloody pulp with a blunt object. Then, to make sure she was dead, he strangled her with the cord from his personal computer.

After dumping her half-naked body in a nearby stream, this “officer and gentleman” called the military police to “report” his wife had “failed to come home” after going for an evening “jog” on post.

But even the Keystone Cops could have nailed this clumsy killer, and it didn’t take long for the colonel to admit that he had lied to cover-up the brutal homicide.

The LAST THING the Army “establishment” wanted was a lurid court-martial with the media reporting every sordid detail. So a “deal” was cut whereby the colonel admitted guilt and got “25 years” – which actually boils down to release in just eight. Not bad for this field-grade officer who resembles an aging “Howdy-Doody."
Once again, a brass hat gets a big break from the military “justice” system.

But what about SSG Jerry Tilton of Windham, Maine? He never KILLED anyone or obstructed justice? And of course, he wasn’t a lieutenant colonel.

All Tilton needed, to be sent to the slammer for 18 years - no parole - was the words of an embittered ex-wife who allegedly knew the “right buttons” to push in today’s “politically-correct” military.

Want to “punish” a husband and “get even” for any perceived sins? All you have to do is pick up the telephone and call the military police. Of course, you should “coach” the kids first to say mama’s version of events, even if the children recant later. Just as long as the damage is done. The end justifies the means.

The Air Force prosecutors licked their chops and said: “Here’s another statistic for our politically-correct scorecard.” They went after Tilton with all the subtlety of a pack of wild dogs chasing an injured deer across a field in Maine.

And Tilton was found “guilty” and shipped off to the DB (Disciplinary Barracks at Leavenworth, Kansas) – another life destroyed by a system that cries out for reform!

It’s easy for the politicians to use the military for colorful “photo ops” and piously declare, in sometimes condescending tones: “You are the finest military we have ever had.” Translation: “I’m just blowing smoke, but I want your votes and that of your families.”

If the United States Constitution has any meaning at all, it must be enforced. Both Bartlett and Tilton swore an oath to protect and defend that sacred document against “all enemies - foreign and domestic.”

Then WHY doesn’t the provision in the Constitution against “cruel and unusual punishment” apply to Jerry Tilton? Where does it say “. . . with freedom and justice for [only ranking officers with powerful friends]?”

Isn’t it about time we REFORMED the so-called Uniform Code of Military Justice? Aren’t there some politicians out there – so willing to send America’s sons and daughters into harm’s way – who would spearhead a long overdue revamp of a system so rife with corruption and command influence that it makes a mockery of fair play and equal justice under the law?

If we are to ask our military to lay down their lives in defense of our nation, don’t we owe them the same Constitutional protections civilians enjoy? The time for real justice is NOW!
