Timothy Dorsey's naval career should have come to an end back on Sept. 22, 1987. That was the day the young hot-shot fighter pilot managed to shoot down an Air Force RF-4C jet during a training exercise.

A subsequent investigation revealed Dorsey, the son of now-retired ADM James Dorsey, disobeyed an order not to arm his weapons, let alone shoot down an expensive piece of government property and endanger the lives of the two crewmen aboard.

One would think an incompetent lieutenant junior-grade would have been kicked out of the Navy after such a stunt, but observers tell MilitaryCorruption.com his powerful "daddy," at the time skipper of the aircraft carrier USS America, pulled a few strings to keep his son in uniform.

SENATE COMMTTEE GIVES "THUMBS-DOWN"
TO DORSEY NOMINATION

It's a quarter century later now, and Tim Dorsey wears the four stripes of a Navy captain. He was hoping his nomination for promotion to flag rank would sail through the U.S. Senate, but that's where he got an unwelcome surprise. The Senate Committee on Armed Services declined to vote on the nomination, and kicked the paperwork back to President Barack Obama's desk in the White House.

Good for them! At least they weren't asleep at the switch. That was fortunate, since those submitting Dorsey's papers, failed to note that the would-be admiral had a very big problem some 25 years earlier.

POLITICS COULD STILL PLAY A PART

Dorsey could still get his undeserved promotion if it turns out he or a member of his family made a fat contribution to Obama in the recent election. Renegade Republican Chuck Hagel, the former friend of John McCain and ex-senator from GOP Nebraska, has been endorsing Democrats in recent years and is presumed to be a cinch to replace Leon Panetta as secretary of defense,

With Hagel's flip-flops on gays and Israel in the last couple weeks, it is not beyond belief that he might be influenced to bring pressure on the Senate to approve Dorsey's nomination on the second go-around.

We hope that doesn't happen.

WHY WASN'T DORSEY WASHED OUT YEARS AGO?

Dorsey should have been washed out of the Navy long ago. That he was able to make it all the way to captain's rank so far, highlights the problems the military has with politics and promotions.

The Norfolk Virginian-Pilot deserves praise for tracing the pilot of the Air Force plane Dorsey shot down in 1987.

Now retired Lt. Col. Michael Ross told the newspaper he's endured two dozen operations on his back over these long years. He constantly suffers from debilitating pain and rues the fact his condition forced him to take a medical retirement just six months before he would have qualified for a full 20-year pension.

The ex-pilot also suffered a broken wrist and both shoulders dislocated when he ejected from his crippled aircraft.

"I don't go a day without thinking about the guy (Dorsey) who did this," Ross said.
