Timothy Dorsey's naval career should have come to an end back on Sept. 22, 1987. That was the day the young hot-shot fighter pilot managed to shoot down an Air Force RF-4C jet during a training exercise.
SENATE COMMTTEE GIVES "THUMBS-DOWN"
It's a quarter century later now, and Tim Dorsey wears the four stripes of a Navy captain. He was hoping his nomination for promotion to flag rank would sail through the U.S. Senate, but that's where he got an unwelcome surprise. The Senate Committee on Armed Services declined to vote on the nomination, and kicked the paperwork back to President Barack Obama's desk in the White House.
POLITICS COULD STILL PLAY A PART
Dorsey could still get his undeserved promotion if it turns out he or a member of his family made a fat contribution to Obama in the recent election. Renegade Republican Chuck Hagel, the former friend of John McCain and ex-senator from GOP Nebraska, has been endorsing Democrats in recent years and is presumed to be a cinch to replace Leon Panetta as secretary of defense,
WHY WASN'T DORSEY WASHED OUT YEARS AGO?
Dorsey should have been washed out of the Navy long ago. That he was able to make it all the way to captain's rank so far, highlights the problems the military has with politics and promotions.
