The Air Force has been rocked to its foundations by the apparent "suicide" of one of its top generals who served as executive officer to ousted Chief of Staff Gen. T. Michael Moseley.

3rd Wing Commander Gen. Thomas Tinsley has been found dead in his home at Elmendorf AFB of a single gunshot wound. "There is no indication of foul play," Air Force spokesman Lt. Col. Michael Paoli said.

A usually reliable source in Alaska who asked to remain anonymous said word is the popular general may have shot himself. His body was found at around 10:30 pm Sunday night (July 27).

The command pilot, who was Moseley's XO from 2005 to 2007, had previously commanded the 12th Fighter Squadron at Elmendorf and the 1st Operations Group at Langley Air Force Base, Va.

Officials said the shooting was "under investigation" and no further information would be immediately available.

Tinsley was close to Moseley and was described as "keeper of all the secrets." One source speculated he may have known important details of the Maj. Jill Metzger cover-up, which took place on his watch.

The deceased general is survived by his wife, a daughter and a nephew.
