He dodged a bullet.
Air Force T/Sgt. Christopher Smith gets to stay in the service, at least a while longer. But he loses some stripes, and after he completes 30 days confinement, will take a bust in rank back to airman first class.
The 33 year-old former basic training instructor choked back tears as he pleaded with a court-martial panel at Lackland AFB to show him mercy. "Please consider my children," he begged them. Maybe he should have been thinking of his young kids when he was talking dirty to some of his female trainees.
PROSECUTORS WANTED TO GIVE SMITH
BAD CONDUCT DISCHARGE
The prosecution, realizing this was a high-profile case, sought to have Smith locked up for 120 days and get him a bad conduct discharge.
A veteran of 14 years in blue, including the last three as a "T.I.", the now-to-be "ex-noncom" was convicted of fraternization and making "sexual remarks" to his trainees.
Smith got off easy compared to Staff Sgt. Luis Walker. He was convicted of rape and sexual assault. That former drill instructor will spend the next 20 years behind bars.
