CHAPLAIN AT BARKSDALE AFB Yet another military chaplain is in trouble on sex charges. The latest officer to be relieved of duties is MAJ Gary Underwood, the senior Catholic chaplain at Barksdale AFB, La. He is facing charges in Arizona that some 20 years ago he "molested" two altar boys at a church in Tucson. In all, the priest faces nine counts of molestation and sexual contact with a minor under the age of 15. The alleged incidents are said to have occured in 1983 and 1984, before Underwood entered the Air Force. While he waits for the wheels of justice to turn, the chaplain has been relieved of all official duties and has been re-assigned as assistant to the director of staff for the 2nd Bomb Wing at the huge Louisiana air base. MilitaryCorruption.com has learned that the accusations came to light in November 2005. The Diocese of Tucson - Underwoood, a Catholic priest, is considered "on loan" to the military - has suspended the chaplain from "performing any priestly duties" until the case has been resolved, one way or another. |
