Starting to dig a shallow grave along a jungle road in Panama was "monumentally stupid," a defense attorney for Army M/SGT Omar Velez-Pagan said at his Fort Bragg court-martial.
The 37 year-old senior NCO said he "accidentally" ran over his mistress, Vanessa Rodriguez, after the two quarreled during a June 2014 ride in his pickup truck. "She jumped out of the cab," and the next thing he knew, the woman had been run over when his military vehicle started to back up after he had exited the vehicle to catch the victim.
According to the sarge, he panicked and tried to bury Rodriguez in a shallow grave, but another soldier quickly discovered the start-stop efforts to conceal the dead body and alerted authorities. The incident took place north of Panama City.
GOING TO THE DB FOR A VERY LONG TIME
Velez-Pagan had pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and trying to hide Rodriguez's remains, but his "dog ate my homework" story about how she got her head crushed beneath the truck's rear wheels just didn't wash.
It's 30 years in prison, a dishonorable discharge, and loss of all pay and allowances for
The convicted killer had been in Panama as a member of the U.S. Army's Assistance Training Management Organization/Joint Planning and Training Team.
