Once he had it made. Navy "swift boat" captain in Vietnam and pal of John Kerry, Wade Sanders was a much-decorated combat veteran and Democrat bigshot like the lanky senator from Massachusetts. Sanders, a retired four-striper from San Diego, was so politically plugged-in, he landed a job as assistant secretary of the Navy during the Clinton administration.
But a child porn conviction sent him to prison, and now the ex-captain has been stripped of one of America's highest decorations for valor. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus has ordered Sander's award of the Silver Star revoked. It was an extraordinary action, especially in view of the fact that the Dems are in power, yet chose to punish one of their own. We don't know if Kerry accepts collect calls from the slammer, but we're fairly certain most of Sander's high-power political friends have long since run for cover.
"I was just researching a book on child pornography," Sanders says to this day. But investigators labeled him a child pedophile and said he deserved to go behind bars for a long time.
POLITICAL PULL SHORTENED PRISON
SENTENCE BY AS MUCH AS TWO-THIRDS
In 2008, the former Military.com columnist, who worked for supreme egotist Ward "punk" Carroll, pleaded guilty to one count of possessing child porn after the FBI raided his home and found numerous examples of the captain viewing the forbidden images.
Sanders obtained a pile of character references from his political pals and managed to get only a 37-month sentence. The prosecution wanted him to go away for at least ten years.
The latest setback for Sanders came when Mabus ordered the Nam vet's Silver Star revoked.
NAVY WON'T ELABORATE ON "NEW INFORMATION"
WHICH UNDERCUT SILVER STAR AWARD
"The decision was reached in 2010, following a review and recommendation by the Navy Dept. Board of Medals and Decorations,"said Navy flak, Capt. Pamela Kunze. She said "new information" had surfaced since the original citation was made. "These facts we now have, could have prevented the award of the Silver Star at that time."
All this brings to mind John Kerry's strange Purple Hearts, all three of which didn't require hospitalization or even a band-aid. The 2004 Democratic nominee for president promised during the campaign to sign a release of his complete records, to include all decorations, but as of press time - seven years later - that full disclosure has not been made.
Why are we not surprised?
While 70 year-old Sanders will have one less ribbon on his dress uniform when he is released from the lockup, odds are no one would dare push fellow "swift boat" skipper John Kerry to come clean on whether his decorations could be bogus as well. That just isn't going to happen. Not unless Kerry ends up some day like his former colleague, the slimy John Edwards. Then, he'd be thrown to the dogs.
