More drama at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Senior cadet and former football player Colton Horton has been accused of raping a University of Tulsa coed during an alcohol-fueled get-together in July at the Oklahoma campus.

The unidentified "victim" is a bit hazy as to what went on, since she admits getting drunk on wine and perhaps passing out.  Horton told investigators the sex was consensual, while the 22 year-old student disputes that.  She says the West Point cadet made her feel "uncomfortable," but stops short of providing any more details of the alleged sexual assault.  In other words, what we have here is yet another "she said - he said" case.

A Tulsa cop who works on the sex crimes unit told Army TIMES "She says she doesn't recall what happened . . . except that at one point, she was in her bed having intercourse with Horton."

On the basis of that, Cadet Horton has been arrested and is awaiting extradition back to Oklahoma this week where he will be arraigned for the alleged sexual assault.

SCORE ONE FOR THE FALSELY ACCUSED

COL DAVID RIGGINSIn a related development, a civilian jury has awarded retired Army COL David "Wil" Riggins the astronomical sum of $8.4 million in damages after they found claims by a female blogger (the officer's former West Point  classmate) to be "without any foundation of proof."

Susan Shannon on two occasions in 2013 wrote on her blog that Riggins had "raped" her while they were attending the USMA.  Riggins emphatically denied the charge.  But the damage had already been done.

Riggins was selected for promotion to brigadier general, but then-Army Secretary John McHugh yanked his name off the list and Riggins ended his military career as a colonel 0-6.

He filed a defamation suit against Shannon in Fairfax County, Va. and after testimony was heard from both parties - each cooperated in the investigation - the jury quickly came to the conclusion Shannon was lying and had set out to damage Riggin's chances of achieving flag rank.

The enormous monetary award will likely be reduced, in compliance with Virginia state law.  The jury, which came back in just 90 minutes time, voted Riggins get $3.4 million in compensatory and $5 million in punitive damages.

Perhaps this surprise court decision will put a chill on future female complaints that have been based on falsehoods, rather than fact.  It also does damage to the many legitimate cases of rape and sexual assault that our women in uniform have suffered over the years.
